History
Smallwood Farm was originally founded by the Jones Family in the 1800s. By 1965, Bernard “Pete” Jones and Phyllis Jones turned the farm into a horse and cattle operation. Pete’s love for angus beef cattle and Phyllis’s love for thoroughbred horses led to the birth of the modern farm. From the early 1980s to the early 2000s, Smallwood Farm’s stallion – Castle Magic – became a signature sire nationwide, recognized as perhaps the country’s leading hunter sire at that time. In 2024, Castle Magic was inducted into the VHSA Hall of Fame. Present day, Smallwood Farm is operated by Robin Jones Mellen – Pete and Phyllis’s daughter. Robin is a well-respected horsewoman in the Virginia horse community and welcomes all breeds of horses.
